#6 Haast to Te Anau
Some small frustration with getting photos from our phone to our computer has eased a bit although we still are not getting them all. But here are some pictures and thoughts from a few days ago.
We drove from Haast, on the west coast of the south island over some passes into the Queenstown area. Four years ago we took a bit of a different route from south to north. This was an easier drive and we saw some scenery we hadn't before. And yet the beauty was similar with mountains and clear blue lakes. We decided that we would stop in Queenstown for a cuppa. That was a mistake. Four years ago when we visited this city, we were not thrilled. It seemed too crowded, too many people. So we wanted to give it another chance. However, part way into the city, the traffic was already backed up: about 2 km. We found a car park, got out, started walking, and were in a mass of people. Found a public toilet, and decided it was time to leave. Another line of traffic, now out of the city. Later in Te Anau, our destination for the night, we were told that there was a weekend marathon. That's why the city was so busy. Still don't have a hankering for Queenstown.
The highlight of the next day was to take a bus tour to Milford Sound, then a boat onto the sound to see the fjords. Colleagues of mine had visited there in the early 2000s, and we had wanted to put that into our itinerary four years ago, and never got the chance. Now was the time. We had posted some photos of that on Facebook, including the "glacial-facial" by the 150 m water fall. Here are just a few more:
As one of our friends said: We are in our happy place!
Good try Patsy! Just a mite higher.
Long about 5:30 pm we made back to Te Anau, shared a meal, and then walked to Lake Te Anau to watch the sunset. Good night Te Anau.
